Events DC Celebrates the Opening of “Made in DC” Coffee Shop, Compass Coffee, Inside the Walter E. Washington Convention Center
New Retail Highlights Events DC’s Commitment to Local Businesses and Providing a Unique Experience for Visitors to the Nation’s Capital
(Washington, DC) – January 12, 2017 – Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia was joined by Ward 2 Councilmember, Jack Evans, city officials and Centerplate/NBSE, the Convention Center’s exclusive catering provider, to celebrate and mark the opening of DC homegrown coffee shop, Compass Coffee, inside the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Compass’ presence in a public-serving building further demonstrates Events DC’s commitment to local, “Made in DC” businesses, while also continuing efforts to drive DC’s opportunities, success and entrepreneurship.
“In staying true to our mission to provide a unique experience for our visitors, we couldn’t be more excited about the arrival of Compass Coffee, a local ‘Made in DC’ business inside the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The Compass Coffee opening milestone reinforces Events DC’s focus on creating enriching collaborations with local Washington, DC businesses and entrepreneurs – as this remains one of the keys to powering the District’s local economic engine. It is also Events DC’s goal to generate heightened visibility for the city, its venues and respective offerings from retail to technology and place making – in an effort to attract more unique and diverse event and entertainment options for both residents and visitors alike to experience and enjoy.

This will be the fifth Compass Coffee location in the District and the local establishment is honored to open its newest location inside the Convention Center in an effort to serve residents and provide global visitors with a taste of Washington, DC. Compass Coffee was founded by two former Marines and DC natives, in the historic Shaw neighborhood of DC, where the Convention Center resides.
At the Convention Center location, Compass Coffee will showcase several of the drinks from its seasonal menu, to include the Nutella Mocha, Butterscotch Latte, Cardinal Blend, Emblem Espresso, as well as other “Made in DC” pastries, fresh sandwiches and salads and other items from local vendors. In the two short years since it first opened its doors, Compass Coffee's cafés have become neighborhood cornerstones and gathering places throughout the District – similar to the role that the Convention Center plays. The company is built on a very simple idea: “Real Good Coffee, Made in DC.”
Centerplate/NBSE, the exclusive catering provider at the Convention Center, partnered with Events DC to help bring Compass Coffee in-house to serve its guests. Long-term goals for both organizations include bringing in additional homegrown DC food and beverage vendors to the Center in an effort to enhance the attendee experience.

"The addition of DC's own Compass Coffee to the Grand Lobby will ensure all of our guests can have a true taste of DC during their visit to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
More than just a meeting facility, over time, the Convention Center has remained committed to creating and providing unforgettable experiences for all of its visitors – as well as being a driving force for the revitalization of the Shaw neighborhood and its local businesses.
