Events DC plays an important role in the city to actively promote, empower and invest in community partnerships across Washington, DC. These strategic community investments and partnerships help infuse local communities with an extensive variety of events and initiatives that generate economic and community benefits for the city and its residents.
As part of our efforts of giving back to the community, Events DC is announcing a new cultural institution grants program to help further enhance our city’s cultural resident and visitor experience.
As an active and engaged member of the local DC community, Events DC is proud to continue to support DC through not only events and activities, but also through initiatives that further enhance the resident and visitor experience culturally. The fabric of Washington, DC is comprised of many non-profit organizations that promote culture, history and the arts – and through Events DC’s new cultural grant program, we seek to collaborate with such organizations to further their goals in support of our city’s bright future. The new grant program aligns with Events DC’s mission of being an economic driver for the District and providing the community with benefits – that make DC a great place to live, work and play.
CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS PROGRAM UPDATE 4/10/20:
Thank you for your participation in the Events DC Cultural Institution Grant Program RFP # 20-S-003-628. As you are aware, Events DC had initially intended to announce grant awards by April 10, 2020. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its severe impact on Events DC operations as well as the hospitality industry as a whole, Events DC has had to prioritize its COVID-19 response efforts. As a result, we are currently re-evaluating the grant program inclusive of its scope and availability of funding. At this time, we are putting the solicitation on hold until we have determined how we will proceed. We are aware of and understand the need for funding for the District’s cultural institutions. As we continue to revise our financial plan for the remainder of FY20 given the on-going impact of the COVID-19 crisis, we anticipate making a decision about the Cultural Institutional Grant Program within the next few weeks.
Cultural Institution Grants Program
The Events DC Cultural Institution Grants Program is a competitive grant program that offers financial assistance to qualified non-profit cultural institutions and organizations based in the District of Columbia that engage in the conservation, interpretation and dissemination of cultural and artistic knowledge and offer and promote activities meant to inform, educate and attract residents and visitors alike to the District of Columbia. A cultural institution is defined as a non-profit organization that supports or promotes the arts, including a museum or theater, incorporated under the laws of the District. Traditional examples of cultural institutions include Museums, Libraries, Art Galleries and Studios, Theaters, Performing arts associations or societies.
Grants are intended to be awarded to a DC-based cultural institution.
Grant Award Value
Individual grant awards will be made on an annual basis based on the Events DC fiscal year calendar. Grant awards for capital projects will range from $2.5 million to $3 million per project and awards for programmatic initiatives will range from $100,000 to $500,000.
Grant Applications Timeline:
Applications for the initial Fiscal Year 2020 cultural institutual grants will be due no later than February 7, 2020.

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered:
Events DC will not consider the following for a cultural institutional grant:
- Incorporated as a nonprofit with a federally designated tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) code, as evidenced by an IRS determination letter dated at least one year prior to the application deadline date;
- Registered to do business in the District of Columbia and is in compliance with the following agencies:
- District of Columbia Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) – Corporations Division (indicating an “active” business license at the time of application, and agreeing to maintain such status throughout the grant period);
- District of Columbia Office of the Chief Financial Officer, Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR);
- District of Columbia Department of Employment Services (DOES); and
- United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS);
- Federal and District of Columbia government entities;
- Religious-based organizations that plan to use the grant funds to benefit specific denominations or congregations; however, applications from religious groups that have non-sectarian cultural arts programs will be considered eligible. Capital-related projects or programmatic initiatives that are religious based;
- Capital Projects based outside of the District of Columbia;
- Organizations or institutions that in policy or practice discriminates against race, ethnic, gender, religion, sex, creed or origin, or any other protected class under the DC Human Rights Act and/or any federal anti-discrimination statute or regulation.
